Travel: VISITOR-TO-CANADA AND NEW IMMIGRANT 90 DAY COVERAGE

Eligibility:

You are not eligible for coverage under this policy if:

-you enter Canada during a time that a physician has advised you not to travel
-you have been diagnosed with a terminal illness with less than 2 years to live
-you have a kidney condition requiring dialysis
-you have used home oxygen during the 12 months prior to the date of application

If any of these conditions apply, you are not eligible for this coverage.

 

What is this coverage?

It is an insurance policy that looks after emergency medical expenses, should the insured have a sickness or accident during his/her stay in Canada . “Medical expenses” include doctor's fees, prescription drugs (limited to $500 as an outpatient) and hospital stays. Some exclusions apply and you are strongly advised to read the policy carefully.

Which company will my policy be with?

The company is 21st Century Travel Insurance Ltd., underwritten by Manulife Financial. Manulife Financial is both the largest public company in Canada and the largest insurance company in Canada.

When must it be purchased?

It should be purchased before arrival. If you purchase the Insurance within 30 days of arrival in Canada and you are 85 or under, there is a 72 hour waiting period for sickness and disease. If this policy is purchase 31 or more days after arrival in Canada and you are 85 or under, there is a 7 day waiting period for sickness and disease. If you are 86 or over, and the policy is purchased any time after your arrival in Canada, there is a 15 day waiting period for sickness and disease.

What information is needed?

  • Name of insured
  • Date of birth
  • Address and telephone number in Canada
  • Date of entry into Canada
  • Effective and expiry date of the insurance
  • The amount of coverage desired

If the person is over 70 years, a brief medical questionnaire is to be completed.

New bonus coverage for accidents

When the $100,000 insurance option is purchased the insured is automatically covered for an extra $50,000 for insured services arising from accidental bodily injury.

Do you offer family rates?

Yes. If the family includes unmarried children under 21 years, the family rate is double the rate of the oldest adult in the family.

When and how is the premium paid?

The premium has to be paid upfront at the time of purchase. You may pay by VISA, Mastercard or cheque (provided the cheque reaches me before the coverage begins) or by a deposit in my Royal Bank account.

Can the policy be extended?

Yes. If there has been a large claim paid, Manulife Financial will review the situation whether to continue coverage or not.

Do I get a refund if the policy is shortened?

Yes, provided a claim has not been paid or intended to be submitted. We need to be informed before the date of departure and receive a copy of the airline ticket, a fax stating the reason for early return and the insurance policy. An administration fee of $25 will be charged.

Do I pay the doctor's and hospital bills first?

If it is a small doctor's bill, you may pay it and receive the amount from Manulife Financial insurance company. Hospital bills are generally settled directly by the Manulife Financial insurance company.

Am I covered in other parts of the world?

You can be covered in other parts of the world, excluding "your" country of origin, provided the major part of your stay---51% of the overall time that you will be insured with us---is spent in Canada, and the maximum number of combined days you spend in any other country before, after, or during your visit to Canada must not exceed 30 days in total.

How long should I take the Insurance for?

You should take it for the period of time you definitely know you will stay in Canada .

Can I not take it in segments to ease premium payments?

It is risky to do so as the 180-days pre-existing condition exclusion will apply to each renewed policy.

Will my premium increase because I have made a claim?

No, it will not.

What is the shortest period I must purchase the coverage for?

You may purchase for 1 day only, but a minimum premium of $25 will apply.

What if I am 86 or over ?

The maximum length of coverage is 180 days following your arrival date in Canada. For example, an 86 year-old who has been in Canada for 30 days may only purchase insurance for up to 150 days. There is also a $500 deductible.
